DTN Retail Fertilizer Trends

OMAHA (DTN) -- Retail fertilizer prices tracked by DTN for the third week of September 2014 continue to show very little movement once again.

All eight major fertilizers prices dipped lower compared to last month, but these moves to the low side were slight. DAP had an average national price of $580 per ton, MAP $598/ton, potash $475/ton, urea $509/ton, 10-34-0 $554/ton, anhydrous $693/ton, UAN28 $329/ton and UAN32 $376/ton.

On a price per pound of nitrogen basis, the average urea price was at $0.55/lb.N, anhydrous $0.42/lb.N, UAN28 $0.59/lb.N and UAN32 $0.59/lb.N.

If you are a regular reader of this column, you know retail fertilizer prices have not moved in recent weeks. You also may know a majority of fertilizers' prices are more expensive than a year earlier.

I was curious about comparing prices now and a year ago, so I went back into the DTN retail fertilizer price database. I looked to see how much prices have changed from nine months ago, from six months ago and from three months back.

Not surprisingly, there was a steady increase for the majority of fertilizers' prices until three months ago.

DAP increased from $498/ton to $541/ton to $607/ton (an increase of $109/ton) while MAP followed the same path going from $534/ton to $561/ton to $631/ton ($97/ton increase).

Also steadily increasing was urea ($448/ton to $522/ton to $540/ton; a $92/ton increase), UAN28 ($318/ton to $341/ton to $355/ton; a $37/ton increase) and UAN32 ($363/ton to $393/ton to $415/ton; a $52/ton increase).

While most fertilizers followed this pattern, there were a couple exceptions.

One fertilizer, 10-34-0, had the same price at nine months and six months earlier ($509/ton) and then a higher price three months ago ($581/ton). This would be a $72/ton increase.

Anhydrous averaged $633/ton nine months ago, only to see the average price drop slightly $627/ton and then turn around and rise to $711/ton three months ago. This is an increase of $84/ton.

And finally, the fertilizer with the steadiest retail price during the nine-month period was potash.

Nine months ago the average price of potash was $480/ton, six months ago it fell slightly to $474/ton and then it rose to $490/ton three months ago. This is a $10/ton change since December.

In short, all fertilizer prices appreciated during this nine-month period, but it was not a steady increase for all fertilizer products.

One of the eight major fertilizers remains double digits higher in price compared to September of 2013. Urea is now up 13% compared to a year earlier followed by DAP 7% more expensive and anhydrous up 5%. 10-34-0 is up 4% while MAP is 3% higher and UAN32 is 1% more expensive.

UAN28 is nearly unchanged from last year's price while potash is 6% less expensive from last year.

DTN collects roughly 1,700 retail fertilizer bids from 310 retailer locations weekly. Not all fertilizer prices change each week. Prices are subject to change at any time.

DTN Pro Grains subscribers can find current retail fertilizer price in the DTN Fertilizer Index on the Fertilizer page under Farm Business.

Retail fertilizer charts dating back to November 2008 are available in the DTN fertilizer segment. The charts included cost of N/lb., DAP, MAP, potash, urea, 10-34-0, anhydrous, UAN28 and UAN32.
